Welcome to Freedom Bison Ranch! We are Bob and Paige, and this is where you will find the story of us, our family, and the ongoing journey of our first-generation Bison Ranch.
Originally from Prescott Valley Arizona, we spent years raising our four children while working in the medical field and running two construction companies. Bob was a firefighter for 30 years, and I managed local medical clinics for 14 years. At this point in our lives, retirement was very appealing! When retirement called, we decided to embrace a simpler, more rural life. As we browsed our potential opportunities through different states, we came across a herd of bison in Colorado, and our purpose unfolded right in front of us. Bob looked at me and said “I know what I want to do. I want to raise bison”, and that moment set us on a new path.
Our children have spread out across the states as they pursue their own careers. We have three sons and a daughter that live in Montana, Maryland, North Carolina, and Colorado with their spouses and families. All three of our sons have served in the military with the youngest still active duty in the Army. Being close to our family played a huge factor in where we were to settle down and start our ranch. In 2022, we sold our home in Arizona and moved into our RV to start searching for our forever home. On a trip out east, we fell in love with the rolling hills and Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee. We found where we would build our home and bison ranch in Ewing, VA on 93 beautiful acres.
Ewing is home to Wilderness Road, a historic trail originally created by bison herds. This connection to our ranching journey makes it even more special. It’s the same trail that Daniel Boone used to blaze a path to Kentucky, and now, we’re proud to be bringing bison back to where they once roamed.
We are a patriotic family with three sons that have served in the US military and Bob being a first responder. Our youngest son is still currently serving. The American buffalo was named the national mammal of the United States in 2016. This majestic animal is a symbol of America and what America represents. When we think of America, we think of freedom. What better way to honor this amazing iconic animal. We easily agreed on Freedom Bison Ranch.
The Wilderness Road in Ewing, Virginia also known as Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail, is perhaps one of the most famous and significant pathways in all of American history. The Road played a vital role in early frontier life and westward expansion in the United States. The Road began as a buffalo trail made by the great herds that once roamed the hills of Central Appalachia. Cherokee and Shawnee warriors used it as a game trail and as a convenient pathway to launch raids on one another for many generations. Knowing that Daniel Boone created this pathway in 1775 is a piece of history we love to share.
Come see the amazing bison roaming the beautiful green hills and pastures of our ranch. On the way here, you will travel down the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail. We are nestled in the beautiful Cumberland Gap area with gorgeous views of the Cumberland Mountains.
